When you first get a Labrador Retriever puppy, caring for them can feel like a 24/7 job. It is strongly recommended to not leave your puppy alone for more than 2 hours per day. Consequently, for at least the first year, you and your family might have to make some sacrifices. You will need to adapt your schedule and usual routines. But there’s no need to worry! Thankfully you can still enjoy many activities from the comfort of your own home. In particular, casino games! In the modern-day, we have witnessed a huge increase in online gamblers. Why leave your house if you don’t have to? There are so many excellent online casinos to visit with a huge variety of games. So you can play from the comfort of your own home whilst keeping an eye on the pup (and hopefully winning some cash). Here are some recommendations for you…

1. Ignition Casino

Ignition is relatively new and launched in 2016, so its already founded success is very impressive. It offers a great game variety, with over 280+ slot games to choose from. The majority of these slots are from the leading gaming software provider, Rival Gaming. There are over 20+ table games including classic and innovative variations. As well as regular tournaments to keep players entertained. The customer service at Ignition is excellent, with three methods of contacting them – live chat, phone and email. And it’s 24/7 so any problems you have can be sorted fast and efficiently.

2. Casinos Jungle

Casinos Jungle launched in 2020! It features a fun, vibrant website design and easy to navigate interface with a jungle theme! It’s the USA’S best online casino guide and has rated and reviewed the best casinos to help you find your next one (online and land-based). The jungle guides (Dr Mick Monay & CJ) goal is to help you have the best casino experience at a reputable and legitimate casino. Embark on your jungle adventure! They also offer a huge range of games from top leading software providers. All of these games are available in demo mode so you can get familiar with the gameplay before risking your own cash.

3. SuperSlots

Super Slots casino was also established in 2020. These newbies are doing well, huh? It offers over 130+ slot games from successful gaming software providers such as Betsoft and smaller up and coming providers such as Magma. You can also choose from 30+ table games including different variants of blackjack, roulette and poker. The best thing about this casino is unquestionably the bonuses and promotions though. They offer an extremely generous welcome offer (with low wagering requirements) and new promotions every month. They like to reward new players and keep loyal players feeling appreciated.

4. Wild Casino

Wild Casino was established in 2017. It offers fewer casino games than most online casinos, with over 100+ slots and 15+ table games. However, the games offer a good variety from classics to innovative, ultra-modern ones. From leading gaming providers! It offers generous and solid bonuses and promotions for new and loyal players. As well as a wide range of banking options and timely withdrawals. And the customer service time is very responsive ad helpful with three different ways to reach them – a live chat, phone or email.

You will have a few weeks before you can walk your little pup and let it burn off some steam. And let me tell you – Labrador Retriever puppies have A LOT of energy. Toys can keep them entertained for long periods of time but eventually, they come running to you for some playtime. Here are some ideas of indoor activities to do with your puppy…

1. Play a Game of Find The Treats

You can bet that they love this game! It gives their nose and legs a good workout as they run around the house discovering treats. Guide your puppy around the house, to the hotspot of treats! And don’t forget to praise them every time they use their sniffing skills to find one. If they’re finding it easy, step it up a little bit and hide them in more difficult places.

2. Teach your puppy to clean up their toys

You may be thinking this sounds like a very difficult task but it can actually be super simple. Especially if you start teaching them from a young age. Not only is it a lot of fun teaching them but it also saves you time in the future cleaning up the toys. Naturally, this needs to be taught after ”sit” and ”drop”. You’re probably thinking, how? guide your dog to his toy container and ask him to ”drop”. Keep repeating this until the toy falls into the container. When it does praise them the most enthusiastically you ever have (and get a treat of course). If you keep repeating this, they’ll soon get the message.

3. Purchase a Stuffed Kong

They retail at about $22.99 – $31.99 on Amazon and you’ll definitely be able to find them easily in your local pet store too! They are truly are life-saver if you’ve just got a Labrador Retriever puppy. The Kongs are super simple to prepare, all you have to do is stuff them with some of your puppies favourite foods. Popular choices include peanut butter (one without artificial sweetener xylitol), wet dog food, canned fish or meat, meat Pâtés, apple sauce, cream cheese and more! Once prepared, chuck it to your busy and watch him stay occupied for a long time whilst he’s busy licking out the treats.

4. A good old fashioned game of tug of war

Your puppy will love a game of tug of war. It provides them with great mental and physical exercise, it’s a win-win. Playing games that involve both of you will help you bond with the puppy too. It allows them to connect with their predatory nature and have some human-canine fun. You also don’t need that much room, so it’s a great game for indoors! Don’t forget to let your puppy win sometimes too, it gives them a great confidence boost whilst encouraging them to play again.

5. Teach them new tricks

What better way to spend time with your dog and keep them entertained than teaching it tricks. Teaching your dog new tricks are beneficial to you and them. Start with the basics. The most popular first tricks to teach your puppy include, sit, lie down, come, drop, leave, heel, roll over and fetch. But let yourself get creative! Labrador Retrievers are naturally very intelligent and people pleasers so they love learning new things. Teaching them basic obedience young will avoid behavioural problems in future and give you more time to progress onto more complicated tricks.

The first few weeks you spend with your beautiful Labrador Retriever puppy should be stress-free and enjoyable! It can be a very unnerving experience if it’s your first time becoming a dog parent. But fear not, we’re here to help you with how to prepare for its arrival. Read on to find out more…..

1. It’s family dicussion time!

We won’t play it down – making the decision to get a dog is BIG. It’s a huge commitment and you need to be sure your family is prepared and onboard. If you all work together, welcoming this new addition to your family will be magical. Needless to say, there is always one who will be the chief carer (usually mum or dad). This person will be the main one to feed, walk and care for it. However, if you all want the puppy, you should agree on some responsibilities to share. If you have a family meeting beforehand, you can map out the different rules and responsibilities so everyone is clear before arrival. Everyone should be on the same page about everything, for example – is the dog allowed on beds and the couch?

2. Be fully equipped

Make sure you have everything you need before your new family member arrives! This will make the settling in process much smoother. Here’s what you need:

  • A comfortable bed
  • Food and water bowls
  • TOYS – lots of them. Puppies need to be constantly entertained and when you’re tired, you’ll be very thankful for the toys taking your place. Especially chew toys, will help ease the pain puppies are experiencing while they are teething
  • Appropriate puppy food – check with your vet to make sure you’re buying the correct food
  • Lead and collar – they won’t be needing the lead until all injections are made but it’s best to be prepared. Maybe you need to tie them up when you have visitors who are more anxious around dogs!
  • Dog gate – it’s a good idea to keep your puppy in a certain section of the house when it first arrives (preferably one without carpet). They will not be toilet trained yet so it makes cleaning up a lot easier for yourself

3. Prepare Your Home

Everything needs to be puppy-proof! This means practically clearing EVERYTHING away that could potentially be in your puppies reach. Here are some things to look out for

  • Electrical cords – cover or unplug them! You can buy electrical cords covers from online or DIY stores
  • Move ALL food out of reach – even food on the edge of counters, you’ll be surprised how high a puppy can jump when he’s feeling peckish
  • Put all medications away – make sure all medications are removed and put somewhere safe out of reach. People usually leave their medications on bed side tables which is easily reached by a puppy
  • Close the toliet lid – might sound ridiculous but your puppy will be very curious, it might try to drink from it and fall in
  • Keep doors and windows close – don’t risk your puppy escaping into the outside world, if they have the chance they will. Again, they are very curious
  • Ensure any sharp objects are safely in draw away from your puppys reach
  • Secure your bins – this is actually a BIG one. Bins are on the floor and not too hard for a puppy to access. All of the different smells coming from it will attract them instantly. Get a secure bin so you can avoid your puppy getting his paws on anything he shouldn’t

4. Have a training plan prepared

You need to make sure you’ve got a training programme prepared for your little one. This gives them a routine from the moment they enter your home. Start with the basics, such as ”sit” and ”drop” then ease them into a healthy routine. Introduce them to their bed as soon as they arrive so they know it’s their place to relax. Many puppies take a while to warm up to it, so guiding them with yummy treats can be helpful. You can also take your puppy to obedience classes which is great for bonding and helping you implement good techniques. These trains are professional so will help you learn the best ways to communicate with your dog and get them to listen to your commands. Remember, the sooner you start, the faster your puppy will learn! Don’t waste any time.

Labrador Retrievers are incredibly intelligent, highly motivated and patient dogs. They are known for being one of the easiest breeds to train because of their eagerness to learn and please. It’s best to train them from a young age, from around about 7 – 8 weeks old. If you’re getting a rescue don’t worry, it’s never too late to train a dog just a little more difficult. The earlier you train them will prevent behaviour problems later in their life. Let’s take a look at how…

1. Socialise them

It’s important to ensure that your dog is comfortable around other humans that are not just you and your family/friends. Lucky for you, Labrador Retrievers are extremely friendly and naturally people pleasers. You should make sure your puppy socialises with as many new people as possible from a young age. Take your dog on frequent walks so they can encounter many different people each day. Because let’s face it, a lot of people will stop to stroke your puppy! This introduces them to many different strangers and human smells. This will help ensure that your dog is friendly to everyone they meet throughout their life.

2. Exercise everyday

Labrador Retrievers have A LOT of energy! That’s why they make great pets for families with young children to play and chase them around all day. In general, it’s recommended that adult Labrador Retrievers have 80 – 90 minutes of exercise each day. Many owners break this into 2 – 3 walks per day. It’s important to go somewhere with open space so they can run around and let off steam. If they do not receive sufficient exercise, they will quickly become bored. This often leads to misbehaving and developing behavioural problems. Which often includes barking too much, digging and destroying anything left unattended in the house – not ideal! Make sure you let them burn off their energy each day to avoid this.

3. Positive Reinforcement

We all like to hear when we’ve done something good sometimes, right? not only is it nice to have the recognition but it also gives us enthusiasm and motivation to do these things again. Labrador Retrievers are the same as us. They have a great eagerness to learn and please their owners. It’s important to reward their good behaviours with something they enjoy – a treat (go easy on them though) a pat on the back, a game etc. They will soon learn what behaviours are good and bad with your prompting.

4. Create an obedience programme

It’s important to create a basic obedience programme when you first get your Labrador Retriever. There are many different books you can buy to help, check out our Best Books on Labrador Retrievers page for some recommendations. You need to take advantage of the fact that Labrador Retrievers love to learn! Once they learn and master something, move onto something harder. It might also be a good idea to go to a local obedience class – this will not only give them basic training but also allow them to socialise with other dogs. And make some furry friends!

It’s so important to be aware of all of the health concerns for Labrador Retrievers before deciding to raise one. Many of these health risks are easily preventable with correct care, nutrition and exercise! Let’s take a look at the top 5 health concerns…

1. Obesity

Labrador Retrievers are more prone to becoming obese, significantly more than other breeds of dogs. Why? if you’ve already got Labrador Retriever, you’ll know, they are ALWAYS hungry searching for scraps of food anywhere they might be. Scientists reveal this is down to genes. The gene affected controls how the brain recognises hunger and the feeling of being full after eating. This is why it’s super important to ensure the meal times of your Lab are consistent from a puppy. So they know when it’s time to eat and when not to. Limit their treats and do your best to avoid overeating. And of course, make sure they are getting sufficient exercise every day.

2. Hip Dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia is commonly found in many large dog breeds. Unfortunately, Labrador Retrievers have a great tendency to develop Hip Dysplasia very early in life. Many factors contribute to the likelihood of a dog developing this problem, such as growth rate, poor diet and irregular exercise being the main ones. If you’re Labrador Retriever is diagnosed, fear not, it’s very common and there are many things you can do to help. Such as physical therapy, joint supplements, medication, exercises plans and more. Get advice from your vet about the best course of action!

3. Allergies

Labrador Retrievers are very susceptible to developing allergies. The most common allergies include food allergies, contact allergies, flea allergies, bacterial allergies and inhalant allergies. Good news – all of them are treatable and manageable! Make sure you are aware of all of the symptoms of these so you can treat your Labrador Retriever early. A lot of these allergies will be caused by environmental factors and can be eased with the correct medication.

4. Osteochrondritis

Osteochondritis is a condition that affects the joints. It’s caused by a lack of blood flow which causes the cartilage of a joint to weaken. Unfortunately, this disease is very common in Labrador Retrievers. You will be able to detect it relatively quickly. Dogs that have developed this disease usually limp on the affected leg. It may also be swollen or warm to the touch. There is a surgery available for this condition that involves removing cartilage and bone fragments. However, this condition can be improved by good nutrition plans and exercise routines without the need for surgery or medication. If the problem continues to affect your dog, vets will usually prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs before turning to surgery.

5. Epilepsy

As most of us know, Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that creates episodes of seizures. It’s extremely common for Labrador Retrievers to develop it. There are many ways to prevent your lab from a seizure. Such as avoiding all triggers! Triggers can include car rides, thunderstorms, routine changes and environment changes (to name a few). Ensuring their general health is good (exercise and diet) can prevent the likelihood of a seizure. And finally, bringing them for regular routine checkups at the vets.
